Shabbat with Yosl Kurland

09 Mar @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm

Come experience new, or actually very old, synagogue music when Yosl Kurland will be co-leading Shabbos services with Rabbi Amita Jarman on Saturday morning, March 9th.
Yosl grew up with traditional cantorial music in the synagogue, and realized that in order to hear it in rural western Massachusetts where he now lives, he would have to learn and sing it himself. So he studied with a variety of traditional cantors and lay prayer leaders and learned from hundred year-old recordings. He serves as ba’al tfile for High Holiday and occasional Shabbos services at two synagogues near his home.

Yosl, a founding member of the Wholesale Klezmer Band since 1982 sings and writes songs in Yiddish, English and Hebrew.
